Futami Okitama Shrine is a seaside shrine renowned for its married couple rocks. Since ancient times, it has held an important role as the place for "hama-sangu"—ritual purification before visiting Ise Shrine.
According to proper Ise pilgrimage protocol, visitors should first perform purification here, then proceed to worship at the Outer Shrine and Inner Shrine in that order.
