北山村は和歌山県なのに和歌山県のどの市町村とも隣接せず、三重県と奈良県に囲まれた位置にある、全国でも唯一の飛び地の村です。 「筏(いかだ)下り」と柑橘の「じゃばら」が非常に有名で、じゃばらは村の裏庭に自生していたたった1本の木から発見されたため、「幻の果実」と呼ばれていました。
