昭和の初め、早出川のほとり（旧川内村）の猟師の家に、柴犬のタマは生まれました。飼い主の刈田さんは、素直で賢いタマを可愛がり、猟に出掛ける時はいつも一緒です。元気に野山を駆け巡り、タマはりっぱな猟犬に育ちました。昭和九年二月五日、刈田さんは猟仲間の小泉さんと、いつものようにタマをお供に八滝沢へでかけました。獲物は鳥か獣か。タマは雪の中でもにおいをかぎつけて、茂みに飛び込みます。タマに追われて飛び立つヤマドリに、二人は鉄砲をかまえました。「ダダーン！」…とその時。大きく鳴った銃声が衝撃となって雪がくずれ、ものすごい雪崩となって二人を襲いました。 あっという間に雪に埋もれ、身動きもとれない刈田さん。上の方で、タマが雪を掘る音がします。「タマー、タマー」と懸命に呼びかけました。刈田さんの声に応えるように、雪を掘るタマ。ついに刈田さんの頭は雪の外へ…。
