田山・ツルギの茶畑

Tea fields featuring distinctive "tate-uremi" rows registered as a Japanese Heritage site

Located in Minamiyamashiro Village, a renowned producer of Uji tea, Tsurugi's tea fields are registered as a Japanese Heritage site as part of "A 800-Year Journey Through Japanese Tea History," and showcase a unique cultivation method called "tate-uremi" (vertical ridging).

This technique of creating ridges in a vertical direction along sloped terrain was ingeniously developed to improve water drainage and increase the efficiency of tea harvesting.
